พ่อเป็นคนทักขึ้นมาก่อนว่า ม็อกซ์ แมวของผมนั้นแปลกประหลาดกว่าแมวตัวผู้ทั่วๆไป พ่อบอกว่า ปกติแมวตัวผู้ที่ไม่ถูกตอน มักจะชอบฉี่รดตามที่ต่างๆในบ้าน ใช้กลิ่นฉุนเฉียวแทนป้ายประกาศเขตแดนของมัน แต่ม็อกซ์ แมวของผมไม่เคยทำเช่นนั้นเลย มันจะไปทำธุระของมันในทุ่งหญ้ารกๆ ไม่ไกลจากบ้านเรานัก
พอพ่อทัก แม่ก็เสริมทันทีว่าแม่ก็ประหลาดใจเช่นกัน เพราะปกติ แมวตัวผู้อยู่ไม่ติดบ้านหรอก ชอบเที่ยวเตร่ตามหาแมวตัวเมีย และมักมีเรื่องทะเลาะวิวาทแย่งชิงแมวตัวเมียกับแมวตัวผู้อื่นๆ ในละแวกเดียวกันเสมอ ม็อกซ์ของผมไม่เคยก่อเรื่องแบบนี้เลย ไม่เคยซมซานกลับมานอนเลียแผลที่บ้านเหมือนแมวตัวผู้อื่นๆ ที่พ่อกับแม่เคยเลี้ยงมา
พ่อกับแม่สรุปว่า “ม็อกซ์นี่ไม่ได้ถูกตอนสักหน่อยน” แต่ทำไมมันทำตัวเหมือนแมวถูกตอนเลยน่ะ แปลกจริงๆ”
“ถูกตอนคืออะไร”
ม็อกซ์ถามผมเมื่อเราอยู่กันสองคนในห้องนอน
ผมประหลาดใจมาก เพราะคิดว่าม็อกซ์ แมวมหัศจรรย์ของผมแสนจะฉลาด มันน่าจะรู้เรื่องนี้ดี ในขณะเดียวกัน ผมรู้สึกกระอักกระอ่วนใจที่จะอธิบายให้มันฟัง เพราะผมว่ามันเป็นเรื่องที่ไม่น่าต้องพูดถึงกันเลย
ผมลืมไปว่า ม็อกซ์อ่านความคิดของผมได้
“ทำไมเป็นเรื่องไม่น่าพูดถึง ถ้าไม่ควรพูดถึง แล้วทำไมถึงทำกับแมวล่ะ ม็อกซ์ถามผม หน้ากลมสั้นปกคลุมด้วยขนสีเทาและขาวแสดงความฉงน
เฮ้อ ปวดหัวจริงๆ ทำไมต้องมีแมวต่างดาวพูดได้มาอยู่ด้วยน่ะ
ผมคิดหนัก พยายามอธิบายเรื่องละเอียดอ่อนนี้ให้ม็อกซ์ฟัง แต่ผมเองก็ไม่มีความรู้เรื่องนี้เลย ผมจึงต้องเปิดคอมพิวเตอร์เข้าไปหาความรู้จากตำราทางอินเตอร์เน็ต อ่านคู่มือการเลี้ยงแมวของสมาคมผู้เลี้ยงแมว แล้วจึงสรุปให้ม็อกซ์ฟัง
“ม็อกซ์ แมวที่โลกของแกเป็นยังไงฉันไม่รู้น่ะ แต่แมวที่โลกนี้ทั้งแมวตัวผู้ แมวตัวเมีย เวลามันเป็นหนุ่มเป็นสาว อยากมีลูก มันจะทำตัววุ่นวายมาก แมวตัวผู้อย่างที่พ่อกับแม่บอกให้ฟังแล้ว มันจะฉี่รดบ้าน บางทีก็อึแล้วไม่กลบด้วย แล้วก็เที่ยวตะลอนๆนอกบ้าน ตามหาตัวเมียทั้งวันทั้งคืน สู้กับแมวตัวผู้ตัวอื่นๆ แย่งชิงตัวเมีย ส่งเสียงร้องขู่กันหนวกหูวุ่นวาย ส่วนแมวตัวเมีย เวลาถึงหน้าจะผสมพันธุ์ ก็จะส่งเสียงร้องเรียกตัวผู้ดังหง่าวๆ ไม่ยอมหยุด แล้วมีลูกได้ปีละสามครอก ครองหนึ่งก็มีลูกแมวได้คราวละห้าหรือหกตัว คิดดูสิม็อกซ์ ถ้าไม่จับพวกแมวตอนเสียบ้าง พลเมืองแมวจะมีมากมายล้นโลกเลยใช่ไหม เลี้ยงกันไม่หวาดไม่ไหวแน่ๆ”
“ตอน คือ ทำให้แมวตัวผู้ ตัวเมีย ไม่มีลูกน่ะหรอ”
“ใช่แล้ว และทำให้แมวประพฤติตัวดีขึ้น ทั้งตัวผู้ ตัวเมียเลย ตัวผู้ไม่ฉี่ทั่วบ้าน ตัวเมียไม่ร้องลั่นหนวกหู ตัวผู้ไม่เที่ยวตีกันด้วย แบบนี้เจ้าตัวผู้ก็บาดเจ็บน้อยลง เป็นโรคติดเชื้อน้อยลงไปด้วยน่ะ สุขภาพดีขึ้น”
“การตอนนี่ ทำอยางไรล่ะ”
โอ๊ย ทำไมม็อกซ์ถึงช่างสงสัยแบบนี้น่ะ
ผมอ่านดังๆ ตามข้อความในตำราบนจอ
“การทำหมันแมวตัวเมีย…”
“ทำหมันคืออะไร” ม็อกซ์ขัดจังหวะ ถามแทรกขึ้นมา
“เฮ้อ การทำหมันก็คือการทำให้ไม่มีลูกไง เหมือนการตอนนั่นละ มีสองคำ กับสัตว์ทั่วไปก็จะใช้คำว่าตอน ถ้าใช้กับคนหรือถ้าใช้กับสัตว์แต่อย่างสุภาพ ก็ว่าทำหมัน”
“ทำไมไม่ใช้คำเดียวกันล่ะ”
“ไม่รู้สิ ผมเกาหัว ทั้งๆที่ไม่ได้รู้สึกคันหัว แต่รำคาญความช่างซักของม็อกซ์มากกว่า
“เออ…เพราะคนเราคิดว่าคนกับสัตว์ไม่เหมือนกันมั้ง ก็เลยต้องคิดคำศัพท์เยอะแยะมาใช้ให้มันต่างกัน แล้วทำให้ฉันปวดหัวไง อย่างหัวนี่ หัวแมวก็เรียกหัว ส่วนหัวคนก็เรียกศีรษะ ให้ยากขึ้นไปหน่อยไง”
ม็อกซ์พยักหน้าแสดงว่าเข้าใจ
“เอาละ อ่านต่อนะ ในตำราเขาบอกว่าอย่างนี้ การทำหมันแมวตัวเมีย สัตวแพทย์จะผ่าตัดเอามดลูกและรังไข่ออกไป ส่วนแมวตัวผู้ สัตวแพทย์จะเอาอัณฑะออกไป อัณฑะ คำนี้ยากมากฉันแปลให้แกเลย ไม่ต้องถาม อัณฑะนี่แปลว่า “ไข่” ไงล่ะ สัตวแพทย์จะวางยาสลบระหว่างผ่าตัด แมวจะไม่รู้สึกเจ็บปวด และจะฟื้นตัวอย่างรวดเร็ว”
ม็อกซ์นั่งฟังเงียบๆ ถึงผมจะอ่านคลื่นสมองของมันไม่ได้แต่ก็พอเดาได้ว่ามันคงรู้สึกเสียวสยองกับวิธีการทำหมันแมว แต่ความช่างสงสัยของผมทำให้ผมถามมันบ้างว่า
“ม็อกซ์ ในโลกของแก แมวไม่ถูกตอนเลยหรอ แกถึงไม่รู้จักเรื่องการตอน”
ม็อกซ์ทำท่าคิด ถ้ามันมีขนคิ้วเหมือนผม คิ้วของมันคงขมวดย่นเข้าหากัน แสดงว่าใช้ความคิดหนัก ในที่สุดมันตอบว่า
“ไม่รู้ ไม่มีข้อมูลเรื่องนี้”
แย่จริงๆ แมวแสนฉลาดของผมมีปัญหาเรื่องนี้ล่ะ บางอย่างมันก็จำได้ดี แต่เรื่องสำคัญๆ อย่างเรื่องนี้ มันจำไม่ได้เลย

Cat Neutering (Chapter 4)
Dad was the first to mention that my cat, Mox was different from other tomcats. He said it was usual for a tomcat to piss in the house to mark out his territory. But Mox never did this. He always did number 1 or 2 in a vacant lot not far from our house.
Mom joined in, saing that shee too was puzzled by Mox’s behavior. Usually a tom did not spent so much time at home. He liked wander around, tracking down a female, and fighting neighboring toms for her. My Mox never got tangled in these troubles. He never crawled ack home covered with wounds like the tomcats that my parents had before. My parents ended the conservation with a question. “Mox wasn’t neutered. Why does he act like a neutered tom? That’s strange, isn’t it?”
‘What is neutering?’ asked Mox when we were alone in my room.
I was surprised a his question since I believed Mox, my wonder cat, was very intelligent. He should have known this word. Meanwhile, I felt embarrassed to explain it; I considered it an off-limits topic.
I forgot that Mox could read my mind.
‘Why is it an off-limits topic? If it’s off-limits, why is it done to a cat?’ asked Mox. His short round face covered with grey and white hair was full of curiosity.
I was thinking hard, trying to find a way to explain this sensitive issue to Mox, But I had no idea. I turned on the computer, surfed the web, and finally found a cat manual on the Association of Cat Owners’ homepage. I read and summarized it for Mox.
‘Mox, I don’t know anything about the cats in your world, but the cats here on Earth, both toms and queens, when they grow up, they want to have kittens, and will pee all around the house. Sometimes he poops and doesn’t cover the pile.
He’ll wander away from home, searching for females day and night. He’ll fight with other toms over them. The scuffles are really noisy. As for the queen, when she comes into season, she’ll call out loudly for tomcats, non-stop. The queen can have three pregnancies a year, and can have five or six kittens in each litter. Think, Mox. If some of the cats aren’t neutered, the world will be overpopulated with them. We won’t be able to care for them all.’
‘Neutering means to prevent male and female cats from having kitten?
‘That’s right. And it makes the cats behave better too. Both the tom and the queen. The tom won’t pee around the house. The queen won’t make her terrible shrilling call. The tomcats won’t fight. So they ‘ll have fewer wounds, fewer inflections and their health will be better too.’
‘How do you neuter the cats?”
Oh! What a curious cat Mox is!
I read aloud the message on the computer screen.
“In the female cat, spaying…,”
‘What does it mean, spaying?’ interrupted Mox.
‘Oh! Spaying also means neutering. There are two other words for neutering. One is spaying, used in a female. The other is castration, used for a male.’
‘Why are there two different words?’
‘I don’t know.” I scratched my head, although it wasn’t itchy. I was annoyed with Mox’s question.
‘Uh… I think there are two different words because there are two different ways to neuter the tom and the queen.’
Mox nodded to show that he understood.
‘Let’s read the manual. Here it says, “in a female cat, the spaying consists of removing the womb and ovaries. In the male cat, the testicles are removed, in an operation that is known as castration.” …Testicle, this word is difficult. You don’t have to ask; I’ll tell you. A testicle is what we call “ball,” you know. …”Spaying and castration are both carried out by the veterinary surgeon under general anaesthesia, so the cat feels no pain. Recovery is rapid.”‘
Silently, Mox sat and listened. Though I couldn’t read his brain waves, I could guess how much he feared the neutering Methods. But I was curious and asked him a question.
‘Mox, aren’t the cats in your world neutered? Is itthe reason why you didn’t know anything about neutering?’
‘Mox was thinking. If he had eyebrows like mine, he would have screwed his eyebrows tightly to show he was thinking hard.
‘I have no idea. I have no data on this topic, ‘Mox finally answered.
What a pity! My intelligent cat had a problem. Sometimes his memory was perfect. But on an important issue like this, he remembered nothing.
