Likely as not, because those who didn’t read the thousand plus pages
couldn’t make head or tail of the millennia of conflict in Middle Earth. The
current version with a real-life cast, shot in New Zealand and helmed by
Peter Jackson, covers only the first volume (he others will be released
annually, though all have been completed), is also faithful to the story. But
once again audiences not in the know won’t appreciate the distinctions
between hobbits, elves, dwarfs, opposing Wizards in this allegory of good vs
evil. Whoever possesses the ring in question has the power to rule the world.
It is passed to Elijah Wood (a hobbit). Can he reach the sacred fire and
throw it in before it is taken from him by the forces of darkness? Accolades
to Ian Mckellen as the protective wizard. Nearly three hours long, well worth
catching 2001.
