Past Perfect Continuous Tense มีวิธีใช้ดังนี้
รูปแบบประโยค คือ ประธาน + had + been + กริยาเติม ing
เช่น
He had been working.
I had been running.
You had been staying.
They had been going.
Jim had been living.
ถาม : Past Perfect Continuous Tense ใช้เมื่อใด
ตอบ : Past Perfect Continuous Tense มีวิธีใช้เช่นเดียวกันกับ Past Perfect Tense ทุกประการ ประโยคที่ใช้ Past Perfect Continuous Tense จะได้ความดีกว่า Past Perfect Tense ก็ตาม ที่ “มีการเน้นถึงความต่อเนื่องของเวลาได้ดีกวา” เท่านั้นเอง เช่น
– ได้ความธรรมดา ถ้าใช้ Past Perfect Tense :
The telephone had rung for five minutes before it was answered.
โทรศัพท์ได้ดังเป็นเวลา 5 นาทีก่อนที่จะมีผู้รับ
(ประโยคนี้เพียงแต่บอกอย่างธรรมดาว่า โทรศัพท์ได้ดังมาเป็นเวลา 5 นาที ไม่มีการเน้นถึงความต่อเนื่องของการดังแต่อย่างใด ที่นี้ถ้าเราใช้ Past Perfect Continuous Tense แทนก็จะได้เนื้อความดียิ่งขึ้นไปอีก คือจะเน้นให้รู้ว่า โทรศัพท์ได้ดัง “ติดต่อ” กันมาเป็นเวลา 5 นาทีจริงๆ
– ได้ความดีกว่า ถ้าใช้ Past Perfect Continuous Tense
The telephone had been ringing for five minutes before it was answered.
โทรศัพท์ได้ดังต่อเนื่องกันมาเป็นเวลา 5 นาที ก่อนที่จะมีคนรับ
– ได้ความธรรมดา :
He had slept for three hours when we called on him.
เขาได้นอนหลับมา 3 ชั่วโมงแล้ว เมื่อเราโทรศัพท์ไปหาเขา
ได้ความดีกว่า :
He had been sleeping for three hours when we called on him.
เขาได้นอนหลับต่อเนื่องกันมาเป็นเวลา 3 ชั่วโมงแล้ว เมื่อตอนที่เราโทรศัพท์ไปหาเขา (ขณะที่โทรศัพท์ไป เขาก็ยังนอนหลับอยู่ ยังไม่ตื่น)
อย่างไรก็ตาม การใช้ Past Perfect Continuous Tense นั้น ก็ควรใช้กับกริยาที่ทำได้นาน (long action) เท่านั้น ถ้าเป็นกริยาทำไม่นานก็ให้ใช้ Past Perfect Tense แทน และที่สำคัญอีกประการหนึ่งเกี่ยวกับ Tense นี้ ก็คือ จะต้องใช้ควบกับการกระทำหรือเหตุการณ์ 2 อย่างเสมอ ไม่นิยมใช้กับเหตุการณ์อันเดียว คำเชื่อมระหว่าง Past Perfect Continuous กับ Past Simple ก็
ได้แก่ When, after, before, that เหมือนเดิม
