Prepositions ถ้าแบ่งตามชนิดของคำแล้วมีอยู่ 4 ชนิดคือ
1. Simple Preposition ได้แก่ บุรพบทที่เป็นคำเดียวโดดๆ เช่น
In, on, at, by, with, of, like, down, per, from, off, till, out, through, near, since, over, for, etc.
2. Compound Preposition ได้แก่ บุรพบทที่เป็นคำผสม ตั้งแต่ 2 พยางค์ขึ้นไปทั้งนี้อาจเกิดจากการเติมคำอื่นหน้านามบ้าง, หน้าคุณศัพท์บ้าง, หรือหน้ากริยาวิเศษณ์บ้าง เช่น
About, above, across, along, amidst, against, among, around, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, besides, between, beyond, despite, except, inside, into, outside, toward, under, until, upon, within, without, underbeneath, etc.

Pending: Pending (= during) his return you should call me up.
ระหว่างที่เขากลับมา คุณควรจะโทรไปหาฉันบ้าง
Concerning: Concerning yesterday’s fire, there were many rumours in the bazaar.
เกี่ยวกับไฟไหม้เมื่อวานนี้ มีข่าวล่ำลือกันมากในย่านตลาด
Regarding: A letter regarding (= about) the boy’s rudeness was sent to his father.
จดหมายเกี่ยวกับความประพฤติหยาบคายของคนนั้นได้ถูกส่งไปยังคุณพ่อของเขาแล้ว
Respecting: Respecting the plan you mention, I shall write to you here after.
เรื่องแผนการที่คุณปรารภถึงนั้น ผมจะเขียนจดหมายไปหาคุณอีกทีหนึ่ง
Touching: Touching this matter I have not made up my mind.
เกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้ผมยังไม่ได้ตัดสินใจเลย
Notwithstanding: Notwithstanding her naughtiness, I love my little girl.
แม้เธอจะซุกซน ผมก็ยังรักลูกสาวคนเล็กของผม
4. Phrasal Preposition ได้แก่ “บุรพบทวลี” หมายถึงหมู่คำหรือกลุ่มคำที่ทำหน้าที่เป็น บุรพบทคำเดียว เช่น
As to = ว่า, เพื่อว่า
I will inquire again as to what your reasons are.
ผมจะถามอีกครั้งว่า อะไรเป็นเหตุผลของคุณ
Because of = เนื่องจาก, เพราะเหตุ
He couldn’t leave the house because of the rainstorm.
เขาออกจากบ้านไม่ได้ เนื่องจากพายุฝน (กระหน่ำลงมา)
By dint of = โดยอาศัย, โดยเหตุ
She gained the first prize by dint of working hard.
หล่อนได้รับรางวัลที่หนึ่งโดยอาศัยการทำงานอย่างหนัก
By means of = โดยอาศัย, โดยวิธี
Sak recovered his health by means of exercise every morning.
ศักดิ์ร่างกายของเขาแข็งแรงสมบูรณ์ขึ้นใหม่โดยอาศัยการออกกำลังกายทุกๆ เช้า
At home in = คุ้นเคยกับ, เป็นกันเองกับ
Khaisaeng is at home in politics.
ไขแสงคุ้นเคยกับการเมือง
At the top of = สุดยอด
He shouted at the top of his voice, but no one heard.
เขาตะโกนจนสุดเสียง แต่ก็ไม่มีใครได้ยิน
At enmity with = เป็นศัตรูกันกับ
In former time the Burmese were at enmity with the Thais.
แต่ก่อนพม่าเป็นศัตรูกันกับคนไทย
By force of = โดยอำนาจของ
Most work can be made easily by force of patience.
งานส่วนมากทำให้ง่ายได้ โดยอาศัยอำนาจของความเพียร
By the side of = ข้าง ๆ (= beside)
The dog was sleeping by the side of its mater.
สุนัขตัวนั้นกำลังหลับอยู่ข้างๆ นายของมัน
By virtue of = โดยผมความดีของ (ตามด้วย V-ing)
Sunai passed the examination by virtue of hard working.
สุนัยสอบไล่ได้ก็โดนผลความดีของการเรียนอย่างเต็มที่
By way of = เพื่อ, ก็โดยที่จะ (ตามด้วย V-ing เสมอ)
I mention this point by way of cautioning you.
ผมเอ่ยถึงจุดนี้ก็เพื่อเตือนคุณ
For fear of = โดยกลัวว่าจะ (ตามด้วย V-ing เสมอ)
She took an umbrella for fear of being caught in rain.
หล่อนเอาร่มไปด้วยโดยกลัวว่าฝนจะตก
For the purpose of = โดยมุ่งหมายที่จะ (ตามด้วย V-ing เสมอ)
He bought the land for the purpose of building a house on it.
เขาซื้อที่ดินนั้นโดยมุ่งหมายที่จะปลูกบ้าน
For the sake of = เพื่อ, เพื่อเห็นแก่
They agreed to a compromise for the sake of setting the matter.
ทุกคนยินยอมเห็นด้วยกับข้อประนีประนอม เพื่อให้เรื่องนั้นสิ้นสุดลง
For want of = เพราะขาดแคลน
The crops in this country failed for want of seasonable rain.
พืชผลในประเทศนี้ล้มเหลวไป เพราะขาดแคลนฝนที่ควรตกตามฤดูกาล
In accordance with = เกี่ยวเนื่องกันกับ
Your action is not in accordance with common sense at all.
การกระทำของคุณไม่เห็นเกี่ยวกันกับสามัญสำนึกสักหน่อย
In (on) behalf of = ในนามของ, เพื่อประโยชน์ของ
This request is made to you on behalf of your son only.
การขอร้องนี้ที่ทำให้กับคุณก็เพื่อประโยชน์ของลูกชายคุณเท่านั้น
In case of = ในกรณีที่มี, เผื่อ
He has kept a reserved fund in case of his daughter’s study.
เขาได้เก็บเงินทุนสำรองไว้ก็เผื่อการศึกษาของบุตรสาวของเขา
In common with = ทำนองเดียวกันกับ
You deserve to be blamed in common with the rest.
คุณสมควรถูกตำหนิทำนองเดียวกันกับคนอื่นที่เหลือ
In connection with = เกี่ยวข้องกันกับ
Tell me all you know in connection with that matter.
บอกฉันมาให้หมดเท่าที่คุณรู้เกี่ยวข้องกันกับเรื่องนั้น
In consequence of = ผลของ (อันเนื่องมาแต่เหตุ)
In consequence of the plane accident many families are in mournig.
ผลของการเกิดอุบัติเหตุทางเครื่องบินคราวนั้น ทำให้หลายครอบครัวต้องไว้ทุกข์กัน
In consideration of = เมื่อพิจารณาถึง
In consideration of his hard work, he may be allowed another chance.
เมื่อพิจารณาถึงงานที่เขาทำงานอย่างหนัก เขาอาจจะได้รับอนุญาตให้มีโอกาสแก้ตัวอีกครั้ง
In course of = ในขณะที่มีการกระทำอย่างหนึ่งอย่างใด
He happened, in course of conversation, to say that she was his wife.
ในขณะที่มีการสนทนากันอยู่ เขาบังเอิญพูดออกมาว่า หล่อนเป็นภรรยาของเขาเอง
In defence of= เพื่อป้องกัน
I said all I could be in defence of my client.
ผมได้พูดทุกอย่างเท่าที่ผมจะพูดได้ เพื่อป้องกันลูกความของผม
In defiance of = เพื่อต่อต้าน, ขัดขวาง
These men got up a riot in defiance of the law.
คนเหล่านี้ลุกฮือขึ้นก่อกวนความสงบเพื่อต่อต้านกฎหมาย
In favour of= เพื่อยกประโยชน์ให้แก่
He has resigned his post in favour of his son.
เขาได้ลาออกจากตำแหน่งเพื่อยกประโยชน์ให้แก่ลูกชายเขา
(คือให้ลูกรับตำแหน่งแทน ว่าอย่างนั้นเถอะ)
In front of = ข้างหน้า
His house stood in front of the bridge.
บ้านของเขาตั้งอยู่หน้าสะพาน
In honour of = เพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่
The day was kept as a public holiday in honour of the King.
วันนั้นถูกจัดให้เป็นวันหยุดสาธารณะเพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่องค์พระมหากษัตริย์
In keeping with = เหมาะกันกับ, สัมพันธ์กันกับ
Your love of sport is in keeping with your age.
ความรักกีฬาของคุณสัมพันธ์ (หรือเหมาะกันกับ) อายุของคุณแท้ๆ
In lieu of = แทนที่ (in place of)
You should take my report in lieu of his.
คุณควรรับรายงานของผมแทนที่จะรับรายงานของเขา
In prospect of = โดยมุ่งหวังที่จะได้รับ
Men plough in prospect of the coming harvest.
มนุษย์เราไถนาโดยมุ่งหวังที่จะมีการเก็บเกี่ยวในฤดูเก็บเกี่ยวที่จุมาถึง
In pursuance of= เพื่อติดตาม
I was ready to do anything in pursuance of my son.
ผมพร้อมที่จะทำทุกสิ่งทุกอย่าง เพื่อติดตามลูกชายผม
In quest of = เพื่อแสวงหา, ค้นหา (in search of)
He comes here in quest of what he needs.
เขามาที่นี่เพื่อค้นหาสิ่งที่เขาต้องการ
In respect of = ในแง่, ในเรื่องของ
Wichai is my senior in respect of age.
วิชัยแก่กว่าผม (คือเป็นพี่ผม) ในแง่ของอายุเท่านั้น
In spite of = ทั้งๆที่, โดยไม่คำนึงถึง
In spite of all my advice that I gave him, he took to the practice drinking.
ทั้งๆที่มีคำแนะนำของผมได้ให้เขาไปแล้ว (แต่) เขาก็ยังคงดื่มเหล้าต่อไป
Instead of = แทนที่, แทนที่จะ
We had better work instead of idling away our time.
เราควรจะลงมือทำงานเสียดีกว่า แทนที่จะใช้เวลาให้หมดไปโดยไม่ทำอะไร (idle away)
In view of (= considering) = ถ้าพิจารณาถึง
We must make up our minds at once in view of the urgency of the case.
เราจะต้องตัดสินใจทันที ถ้าพิจารณาถึงความรีบด่วนของคดีนี้
In sight of = เข้ามาอยู่ในระยะที่ต้องเห็นด้วยตา
We have now come in sight of the land.
ขณะนี้เราได้เข้ามาอยู่ในระยะที่มองเห็นแผ่นดินแล้ว
In event of (= in case of) = ในกรณีที่มี
I shall have another chance in event of failure.
ผมจะมีโอกาสอีกครั้งหนึ่งในกรณีที่มีความล้มเหลวเกิดขึ้น
In the face of = เมื่อเผชิญหน้า
Sombat was always brave in the face of danger.
สมบัติกล้าหาญเสมอเมื่อเผชิญหน้ากับอันตราย
In the guise of= ในร่างที่ปลอมตัวเป็น
Mana came back to his house again in the guise of an Indian merchant.
มานะกลับมาบ้านของเขาอีกครั้งหนึ่ง ในร่างที่ปลอมตัวเป็นพ่อค้าอินเดีย
In the hope of= โดยหวังที่จะ (ตามด้วยกริยาเติม ing เสมอ)
He tried again in the hope of succeeding next time.
เขาพยายามอีกครั้งหนึ่ง โดยหวังที่จะได้รับความสำเร็จในคราวต่อไป
In the rear of= ตามหลัง, ข้างหลัง
The dog followed in the rear of its master along the street.
สุนัขตัวนั้นวิ่งตามหลังนายของมันไปตามถนน
In the teeth of= เมื่อเผชิญอุปสรรคเกี่ยวกับ
He couldn’t keep on running in the teeth of the rainstorm.
เขาไม่สามารถวิ่งต่อไปได้เมื่อเผชิญอุปสรรคเกี่ยวกับพายุฝน
In order to= เพื่อที่จะ (ตามด้วย Verb ช่อง 1 เสมอ)
She came here in order to see her mother.
หล่อนมาที่นี่ก็เพื่อที่จะพบกับมารดาของเธอ
In proportion to= เมื่อเทียบอัตราส่วนกับ
He is cleverer than you in proportion to his years.
เขาฉลาดกว่าคุณเมื่อเทียบอัตราส่วนกับอายุของเขา
In regard to = เกี่ยวกับ
What have you to say in regard to that subject?
คุณมีอะไรจะพูดบ้างเกี่ยวกับเรื่องนั้น?
In unison with= เป็นอันหนึ่งอันเดียวกัน
Your opinions are not in unison with those of mayority of people.
ความคิดเห็นของคุณไม่เป็นอันหนึ่งอันเดียวกันกับความคิดเห็นของคนส่วนมาก
An account of = เนื่องจาก
The famine tooke place on account of the failure of the rain.
ความอดอยากเกิดขึ้น เนื่องจากความแห้งแล้งขาดฝน
On the brink of = บนขอบเหว, ในระหว่างอันตราย
Their country is on the brink of serious disaster.
ประเทศของเขากำลังอยู่ขอบเหวแห่งความหายนะอันรุนแรง
On the eve of= ในทันทีที่มี, ขณะเดียวกันกับ
He died on the eve of victory.
เขาถึงแก่กรรมในทันทีที่มีชัยชนะ
On the ground of= โดยเหตุผลสนับสนุนเอง
I declined the invitation on the ground of the previous engagement.
ผมปฏิเสธไม่รับคำเชิญโดยเหตุผลที่ว่าได้มีนัดไว้ก่อนแล้ว
On the part of= ในแง่, ในเรื่องของ, สำหรับ
Incompetence on the part of a policeman is unable to arrest every burglar.
ความหย่อนสมรรถภาพในเรื่องของตำรวจก็คือไม่สามารถจับขโมยได้ทุกคน
On the point of = เกือบจะ (ตามด้วยกริยาเติม ing)
He was on the point of letting out the secret when the major came in.
เขาเกือบจะปล่อยความลับออกมาแล้ว เมื่อนายพันตรีเข้ามา
On the score of = โดยอ้าง, โดยเหตุผลสนับสนุนเอง
Mana begged to be excused on the score of inexperience.
มานะขอให้ยกโทษให้เขาโดยอ้างเหตุผลว่าขาดความชำนาญ
On pretence of = หลอกให้คนเชื่อโดยอาศัย
His evil deeds were done on pretence of religion

With a view to= เพื่อที่จะ (ตามด้วย Noun หรือ V-ing)

With an eye to = โดยมุ่งหมาย
We are working hard now with an eye to the future.

With reference to = เกี่ยวกับ
