Present Perfect Continuous Tense มีวิธีใช้ดังนี้
รูปแบบประโยค คือ Subject + have, has + been + กริยาเติม ing
เช่น
I have been speaking.
You have been speaking.
He has been speaking.
A boy has been speaking.
The boys have been speaking.
ถาม : เราใช้ Tense นี้เมื่อไร?
ตอบ : เราใช้ Tense นี้เมื่อต้องการจะเน้นว่า “การกระทำหรือเหตุการณ์นั้นเกิดในอดีต ต่อเนื่องมาถึงปัจจุบัน (ขณะพูด) และก็จะคงดำเนินต่อไปอีกในอนาคต” อันที่จริง Tense นี้ก็ใช้เหมือนกับ Present Perfect Tense นั่นเอง ต่างกันแต่เพียงว่า Present Perfect Continuous Tense เน้นความต่อเนื่องไปถึงอนาคต ส่วน Present Perfect Tense กล่าวถึงแต่เพียงว่าเหตุการณ์เกิดในอดีตดำเนินต่อมาถึงขณะพูด (ส่วนอนาคตต่อไปจะดำเนินไปอีกหรือไม่นั้น มิได้กล่าวถึง) เช่น
I have been working for three hours.
ผมได้ทำงานมาแล้วเป็นเวลา 3 ชั่วโมง
(ประโยคนี้ หมายความว่า ผมได้ทำงานมาแล้วตั้งแต่ชั่วโมงที่ 1 จนกระทั่งถึงเวลาพูดประโยคนี้ออกไป รวมเวลาที่ได้ทำมาแล้ว 3 ชั่วโมง และชั่วโมงที่ 4 ที่ 5 ก็ยังคงทำต่อไปอีก แต่ถ้าผู้พูดพูดออกไปว่า I have worked for three hours. ก็หมายความว่าได้ทำมาแล้วเป็นเวลา 3 ชั่วโมง เช่นกัน แต่ชั่วโมงที่ 4 ที่ 5 จะทำต่อไปอีกหรือไม่นั้นไม่ทราบ)
Thomas has been living in Thailand since 1980.
โทมัสได้มาอยู่ในประเทศไทยตั้งแต่ปี 1980
(ประโยคนี้หมายความว่า โทมัสได้มาอยู่ประเทศไทยตั้งแต่อดีต คือ 1980 และเวลานี้คือเวลาที่พูดประโยคนี้ออกไปก็ผ่านพ้นมาหลายปีแล้ว โทมัสก็ยังอยู่ประเทศไทย และอนาคตต่อไปคือปีหน้าเขาก็ยังอยู่ประเทศไทยอีกยังไม่กลับไปบ้านเขา)
อย่างไรก็ตาม Tense นี้ก็ไม่ค่อยใช้กันบ่อยนัก ส่วนมากนิยมใช้ Present Perfect Tense มากกวา โดยเฉพาะกริยาที่มีความหมายเป็นการกระทำที่ไม่นาน ไม่ควรนำมาแต่งด้วย Present Perfect Continuous Tense
Verb ที่นำมาแต่งใน Present Perfect continuous Tense ต้องเป็น Verb ที่มีความหมายกระทำได้นาน ได้แก่ learn, stay, live, work, sit, stand, sleep, rest, read, wait, play, etc.
